Precautions to take
Drinking water
Tap water in India is not safe to drink. Always have bottled water during your travels. Check the seal before purchasing.
Emergency medical cover and travel insurance
We recommend purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance covering personal effects, personal accident, medical exigencies, emergency travel expenses, cancellation and curtailment.
Money – Cash Vs Card
Carry adequate cash to cover personal expenses (such as paying for entry tickets, as rickshaw/tuk-tuk and purchasing items from smaller vendors). Most places in India accept major credit cards and almost all ATMs accept Visa and MasterCards. Amex cards are less popular throughout the country and almost not accepted in smaller cities and villages. Ensure your card enables international swipes.
Money changers are available throughout the city as well as most hotels and resorts. All international airports also have money changers.
Safety – Am I safe in India?
Be vigilant throughout your travel and you will be as safe in India as in any other country. Keep your money and your passports on your person. It’s better to have them in a sling bag in front of you rather than in your backpack. It’s advisable to leave your passports and other valuables in the hotel safe while you are out sightseeing. Always carry a copy of your passport along.
It is recommended moving in large groups at night, especially through deserted streets. Let your room-mate or your trip organiser know if you are planning to stay out late.
Dress sensibly keeping in mind that India is a traditional county.
Electricity – What plugs are used in India?
The voltage supply in India is 230-240 volts. Most of the plug-in pins in India are different from western made plug-in pins. Carry an adaptor.
